SEBASTIAN MULLAERT & ULF ERIKSSON Porque dançamos nós? O que nos leva a entregar os nossos corpos ao som, ou a juntarmo-nos a outros humanos para o fazermos? Uns buscam a simples função social e funcional do convívio numa pista, outros tentam comunicar através dela, tantos de nós buscamos no ritual da dança a fuga, a terapia, o sexo, o amor. Sempre assim foi e será, quer o fundo sonoro se produzisse por paus e pedras ou emane de complexas máquinas. Sebastian Mullaert e Ulf Eriksson são dois suecos de Malmö desde sempre fascinados por estas questões e por fazer outros dançar. Sebastian é há largos anos um dos produtores suecos mais reconhecidos na cena electrónica, graças ao seu papel bem documentado como metade dos Son Kite e dos Minilogue. Um verdadeiro xamã dos tempos modernos espalhando via abordagens mais techno, ambient ou trance a sua visão do papel da dança no expandir dos limites da interacção e da consciência humana. Ulf Eriksson é o fundador e pensador por trás da Kontra-Musik, a razão desta noite, que começou ela mesmo por ser uma festa em Malmö, antes de ser uma editora. Ulf é um exímio DJ de gosto apurado, e isso nota-se na forma como construiu a label desde 2006, quase como de se um longo DJ set se tratasse, sem pressas e com muito para dizer. A um elenco sueco de respeito que foi incluindo Agaric, Jonsson/Alter e Andreas Tilliander, Eriksson juntou gente como Luke Hess, Jus-Ed ou Dettmann e Klock, quando ainda poucos sabiam quem eles eram fora de Berlim. Ou seja, ao gosto junta instinto e abrangência, tudo guiado pela visão Kontra, mas um “contra” entendido não como oposição mas sim alternativa. Em “The Dance”, nome do álbum que acabam de lançar na Kontra-Musik, e do conceito que vêm apresentar ao Lux, improvisação e DJing juntam-se, com Sebastian a cargo da primeira e Eriksson a cargo do segundo, numa fusão de sons e simbiose de ideia que nos envolverão enquanto dançamos. E dançaremos. Porque sonhamos, porque precisamos, porque amamos, porque é parte da essência de sermos humanos. E poucos há que tão bem nos possam relembrar disso, como Sebastian Mullaert e Ulf Eriksson. TM404 303/303/303/303/606. Não, não se trata do código de lançamento de um missíl balístico intercontinental. Esta sequência de números é o nome de uma das faixas do álbum de estreia homónimo de TM404, e significa que a faixa em questão foi feita usando quatro máquinas TB-303 e uma TR-606, ambas criadas pela japonesa Roland, duas de uma linha de instrumentos que moldaram decisivamente o som da música que nos faz dançar nos últimos 30 anos. TM404 não é no entanto uma máquina, mas sim o sueco Andreas Tilliander, o coração humano que palpita no núcleo de uma orquesta feita destas e outras máquinas com números como nomes, um domador de feras de mão firme nas rédeas de instrumentos deixados fluir quase em roda livre, mas só quase, porque é música para mover corpos e mentes que aqui se busca, e todo o caos tem uma ordem por trás, por estranha que nos pareça. Tilliander tem já larga experiência na matéria, com edições em labels respeitadas como a Mille Plateaux, Raster-Noton e Type, tanto em nome próprio como enquanto Mokira e Kondens, sendo estes últimos dois projectos lançados pela Kontra-Musik. Como TM404, Tilliander enquadra-se numa corrente que podemos designar de neo-acid, a par de nomes como Tin Man ou mesmo o Recondite do álbum On Acid, uma linhagem cujas raízes podemos traçar até Plastikman, o que torna normal a presença já repetida de TM404 nas festas ENTER de Richie Hawtin em Ibiza. Sinais por isso promissores para a estreia de TM404 no Lux, num live-act feito de linhas ácidas à desgarrada e dos acidentes felizes que Tilliander sempre busca nas suas actuações. Dizem os rumores que a Roland nunca fez nenhuma maquina com o nº 404, pois na tradição japonesa esse número é considerado do azar, mas a essência de TM404 é essa mesmo: subverter tradições. What leads us to surrender our bodies to the sound, or to gather with other humans to do it? Some search for the basic social function of gathering on a dancefloor, others seek to communicate through it, so many of us use the ritual of dance for escape, for therapy, for sex, for love. It has always been so and it will always be so, whether the soundtrack is produced by sticks and stones or emanates from complex machines. Sebastian Mullaert and Ulf Eriksson are two guys from Malmö who´ve always been fascinated by the dance and by making others dance. Sebastian has long been one of the swedish producers most widely-recognized in the electronic scene, largely due to his well documented role as half of Son Kite and Minilogue. A true modern-day shaman, using techno, ambient and trance music approaches to spread his vision of the role of the dance in the expansion of the limits of human interaction and consciousness. Ulf Eriksson is the founder and mentor behind Kontra-Musik, tonight´s reason of being, which itself started as a party in Malmö, before becoming a label. Ulf is a consumate DJ of razor-sharp taste, and that shows in the way he´s developed the label since 2006, almost as if it was a long DJ set, with no rush and a lot to tell. Along with a respect-worthy swedish cast which brought along Agaric, Jonsson/Alter and Andreas Tilliander, Eriksson rallied people like Luke Hess, Jus-Ed or Dettmann e Klock, when not many knew who they were yet, outside of Berlin. So you see, along with the knowledge, Ulf has instinct and a wide vision, all guided by the Kontra approach, not to be taken as being “against“ anything, but simply a different approach “The Dance” is the name of the album they just put out on Kontra-Musik, and of the concept they are bringing to Lux, where improvisation and DJing gather, with Sebastian in charge of the former and Eriksson of the latter, displaying a fusion of sounds and a symbiosis of ideas which will embrace us while dancing. And dance we shall. Because we dream, because we need it, because we love, because it´s in the essence of the human experience. And few can remind us of this as well as Sebastian Mullaert and Ulf Eriksson. TM404 303/303/303/303/606. No, that´s not an intercontinental ballistic missile´s launch code. This sequence of numbers is the name of one of the track´s on TM404´s self-titled debut album on Kontra-Musik, and it means that the track was made using 4 TB-303 machibes and one TR-606, both created by japanese maker Roland, two in a line of instruments that decisively shaped the sound of the music that´s been making us dance over the last 30 years. TM404 is not a machine, however. it´s Swedish composer Andreas Tilliander, the human pulse at the core of an orchestra made up of these and other machines with numbers for a name, a tamer of beasts with a firm grip on his instruments, which are left to almost flow freely, but just barely, because it´s still music to make minds and bodies sway that we´re after, and chaos has an order behind it, as strange as it may appear. Tilliander has large experience on these matters, with releases on labels like Mille Plateaux, Raster-Noton and Type, either under his name, or as Mokira or Kondens, these last two also coming from Kontra-Musik. As TM404, Tilliander find himself as part of the neo-acid current, along with names like Tin Man or Recondite´s On Acid album, a lineage whose roots can be traced back to Plastikman, which is why it makes sense that he´s a repeat presence at Richie Hawtin´s ENTER parties in Ibiza. Promising signs, then, for TM404´s Lux debut, with a live-act made of duelling acid lines and the kind of happy accidents Tilliander strives for in his performances. Rumors say that Roland never made a machine with 404 in it´s name because that number means bad luck in Japanese tradition, but that´s TM404´s essence : to subvert traditions.
