'The Rising Star'

No dia 21 de maio às 18h inauguramos ‘The Rising Star’, exposição individual de Pedro Vaz.

The Rising Star, transporta-nos para um tempo em que uma estrela a nascer a Este podia orientar a leitura do território e dos seus ciclos. O título remete para Aldebarã, estrela vermelha cuja aparição no horizonte da Serra da Estrela, por volta de 4000 a.C., é associada por Fábio Silva à orientação dos monumentos megalíticos da região de Carregal do Sal. Esta relação entre dólmen, montanha e céu convocava uma forma antiga de inscrição cosmológica da paisagem, ligada ao movimento dos rebanhos e à ocupação temporária das pastagens de altitude.

Hoje, alguns pastores continuam a atravessar a Serra da Estrela com os seus rebanhos,

mantendo uma relação física e quotidiana com a montanha. A exposição parte desta

continuidade sensível entre antigas formas de orientação pelo céu e aquilo que, dessa

relação primordial com o território, ainda subsiste na experiência contemporânea da

montanha.

Reunindo vídeo, pintura e escultura, a exposição constrói-se a partir de uma experiência

direta na Serra da Estrela. O vídeo acompanha um dos últimos pastores que ainda pratica a transumância, registando um dos seus últimos dias na serra, em setembro de 2025, num percurso marcado pelo ritmo do rebanho, pela dureza do terreno e pela relação exigente entre homem, animal e montanha. As pinturas prolongam essa experiência através da cor, da luz e da matéria, fixando a passagem do tempo entre a noite, o amanhecer e o crepúsculo, bem como o início e o fim do verão. Na galeria, dois malhões em pedra seca recuperam formas vernaculares de abrigo e resistência, construídas apenas por gravidade, peso e encaixe.

The Rising Star propõe uma paisagem vivida como forma de conhecimento: uma experiência em que a montanha se torna, simultaneamente, matéria, orientação, duração e abrigo, atravessada pelos gestos humanos e animais que nela permanecem.

On May 21st at 6pm, we will be opening ‘The Rising Star’, a solo exhibition by Pedro Vaz, at Kubikgallery Lisbon.

The Rising Star transports us to a time when a star rising in the East could connect humans to the land and its cycles. The exhibitions’s title refers to Aldebaran, the red star whose appearance on the horizon of Serra da Estrela, was associated with the orientation of the megalithic monuments in the Carregal do Sal region by archaeoastronomer Fábio Silva. This relationship between dolmen, mountain and sky summoned an ancient form of cosmological inscription of the landscape, connected to the movement of herds and the transient presence of high-altitude pastures.

Today, some shepherds continue to cross Serra da Estrela with their flocks, maintaining a physical and lived relationship with the mountain. The exhibition emerges from this sensitive continuity between ancient forms of orientation with the sky that still exist in contemporary experiences of the mountain.

Bringing together video, painting and sculpture, the exhibition is built from a direct experience of Serra da Estrela. The video follows one of the last shepherds who is still practicing transhumance, recording one of his final days in the mountains in September 2025, along a route shaped by the rhythm of the flock, the harshness of the terrain and the demanding relationship between human, animal and mountain. The paintings extend this experience through color, light and matter, registering the passage of time between night, dawn and dusk, as well as between the beginning and the end of summer. In the gallery, two dry-stone structures recover vernacular forms of shelter and resistance, constructed solely through gravity, weight and interlocking.

The Rising Star transmits a living landscape as an archive of ancient knowledge: an experience in which the mountain becomes, simultaneously, matter, orientation, duration and shelter - traversed by humans throughout centuries with a common pursuit of survival.
