THE BLACK MADONNA Ela é The Black Madonna. E é impossível ficar-lhe indiferente. Descreve-se como mente andrógina e santa padroeira de filhas abandonadas. E escreveu há bem pouco tempo um manifesto que quase poderia substituir qualquer outra introdução. Clama pelo que a música de dança precisa, numa lista que vai desde miúdas revoltadas, a DJs que tentam adormecer os filhos antes de irem tocar. Clama pelo direito à dança daqueles que são rejeitados e daqueles que passaram a semana numa luta de sobrevivência. É esta imagem de união e perseverança que Marea Stamper traz para os que a seguem. Tal como a representação cristã de Maria, a original Madonna, que carrega nos braços o seu filho em representação máxima de afeto, também ela parece querer receber nos seus todos aqueles que se propuseram a partilhar do rito da dança. Um ideal de comunhão, amor e, porque não, devoção, que nos faz ter presentes o início do House, que acolhia aqueles que a sociedade dominante teimava em excluir. Residente do Smart Bar em Chicago (posto que alcançou ao mesmo tempo que Derrick Carter e do já falecido pioneiro Frankie Knuckles), não tardou a ser promovida a Directora Criativa, podendo exercer um irreverente estilo de curadoria. Edita em nome próprio desde 2012 com singles e remisturas em editoras como a Stripped & Chewed ou a Argot. Mas é como DJ que se apresenta nesta noite onde vai fazer saltar do vinil muito Disco, House e Techno, com a alegria contagiante e estilo de mistura notórios que lhe são conhecidos. O convite é à união e à festa, com The Black Madonna. MIKE SERVITO Prestem atenção: mais um fio de ligação Lisboa – Nova Iorque a acontecer diante dos nossos olhos. Convenhamos: sempre gostámos de fazer acontecer coisas foram do visto e batido. E quando The Black Madonna quis Mike Servito para festejar o seu aniversário, não podíamos dizer que não. É mais uma estreia em Portugal, mas que está longe de trazer um novato: Servito estreou-se em 1995 em Detroit, local de origem do Techno, onde aliás cresceu bem entre as ondas da rádio local que iam servindo de poiso para as batidas futuristas que, 20 anos depois, já se tornaram um fenómeno quase universal. Membro do colectivo Ghostly International, transplantou-se para Nova Iorque depois de anos de residências na cidade dos motores. Adepto dos sons estranhos, do vinil, do lado mais House da vida, da improvisação, de misturas curiosas, do abandono das regras. Ah! – Mike Servito construiu a carreira apoiado apenas na selecção musical, técnica, e personalidade. Não foi para estúdio, não assentou nada em cima de hits. Algo raro nos dias de hoje mas que muitas vezes é a marca de grandes DJs, aqueles que se dedicam indivisamente à arte de usar somente a música dos outros para se expressarem. And it’s impossible to remain indifferent to her. She describes herself as an androgynous mind and patron saint of abandoned daughters. And, not long ago, wrote a manifesto that could almost substitute any further introductions. She cries for what dance music needs, in a list that goes from riot girls to DJs who try to put their kids to sleep before going out to play. She cries for right to dance for those who are rejected and those who spent their week struggling. This is the image of union and perseverance that Marea Stamper signifies for those who follow her. Just like the Christian representation of Mary, the original Madonna, who carries in her arms her son as the highest depiction of affection, she seems to want to receive in hers all of those who want to be a part of the rite of dance. An ideal of communion, love and (why not) devotion, which reminds us all of the beginnings of House, that welcomed those which society stubbornly kept excluding. A resident of Chicago’s Smart Bar (a position she got at the same time as Derrick Carter and the late great Frankie Knuckles), she was soon promoted to Creative Director, which enabled her to exercise an irreverent curatorial style. Since 2012, singles and remixes by her can be found on labels such as Stripped & Chewed or Argot. But it is as a DJ she’ll perform on this night, where Disco, House and Techno will jump out of the vinyl, with the contagious joy and unique mixing style she’s known for. Let’s face it: we’ve always liked to make less usual things happen. And when The Black Madonna wanted Mike Servito to help celebrate her birthday, we couldn’t say no. It’s his debut in Portugal, but he’s far from being a newbie: Servito started out in 1995 in Detroit, the birthplace of Techno, where he grew up listening to the radio provide a launch platform for the futuristic beats which 20 years later have already become a near universal phenomenon. A member of the Ghostly International collective, he moved to New York after years of residencies in the motor city. A fan of weird sounds, vinyl, the Housier side of life, improvising, nice organic mixing, and breaking the rules, Mike Servito built his career on music selection, skill and sheer personality. That’s right – he didn’t hit the studio to cut any records. Something increasingly rare these days, but also the mark of some great DJs who dedicate themselves exclusively to the art of expressing themselves through other artists’ music.
