ARTIST TALK é um ciclo de conversas organizado pela Zaratan que oferece a oportunidade de encontrar os artistas internacionais em residência e de conhecer o seu processo criativo.  
Durante este encontro, Bobby Abate apresentará o seu baralho de cartas «Outsider Tarot», lançado em 2021, bem como um vislumbre do seu mais recente projeto. 
Historicamente, os baralhos de cartomancia têm servido como ferramentas para registar histórias locais e familiares, muitas vezes através de jogos, onde a maioria dos primeiros baralhos foi criada para os ricos e poderosos. 
Para o artista, criar os seus próprios baralhos de cartomancia representa um ato de rebelião, empoderamento e inclusão – uma forma de tecer as histórias e lendas dos marginalizados nesta tradição. 
O «Outsider Tarot» é um objeto inspirado por aqueles que existem para além das margens: artistas, visionários, foras-da-lei, bruxas, excêntricos, músicos, Queer, ativistas, nerds, coletivos e qualquer pessoa que desafie o status quo. Não é uma recriação do Tarot mais popular do mundo, o baralho Rider-Waite, mas sim o resultado de uma década de investigação e criação de um baralho de Tarot do zero, utilizando o quadro esotérico da Qabala Hermética. Este sistema antigo, que moldou os designs de Arthur Waite, Aleister Crowley, Manly P. Hall e outros, tornou-se a base para a sua reimaginação moderna e inclusiva do Tarot. 
O artista também partilhará ideias sobre o seu mais recente projeto: um baralho de adivinhação que funde a tradição Lenormand com o Polari, a linguagem secreta usada por homens homossexuais na Europa da metade do século XX. Este baralho transforma uma linguagem codificada de sobrevivência numa ferramenta contemporânea de adivinhação e empoderamento.

BIO:  BOBBY ABATE (Brooklyn, NY) é umx artista Queer, cineasta e editorx cujo trabalho tem sido exibido no MediaScope series do Museu de Arte Moderna, no Festival de Cinema de Nova York, no Guggenheim em Bilbau, no Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Chicago, na Cinematheque de São Francisco e, mais recentemente, na International Objects em NYC. A sua série Queer Objects ganhou o terceiro lugar na exposição anual de trabalhos em papel de 2024, com júri da curadora-chefe do Whitney Museum, Kim Conaty, que elogiou a "brincadeira na seleção de objetos que eram significativos para x artista e na forma como Abate capturou o seu espírito". As residências de Bobby incluem o Art Space on Governors Island do Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2023), a Constance Saltonstall Foundation em Ithaca, NY (2024) e o VCCA em Amherst, VA (2024). É vencedorx da Bolsa de Projetos Especiais Princess Grace de 2024, da Bolsa do Leighton International Artist Exchange Program para uma residência no Zaratan em Lisboa (2025) e da Bolsa de Artista DVAA (2023). Bobby possui um MFA do Bard College. Como editorx, Bobby contribuiu para as temporadas 3 e 4 da docuserie Queer We’re Here na HBO, que recebeu prémios Peabody e da Academia de Televisão. Além disso, cria animações para a renomada performer drag Sasha Velour. Em 2021, Bobby autopublicou The Outsider Tarot, apresentando 80 obras de arte originais que reimaginam o Tarot tradicional num contexto moderno e Queer. Este baralho, juntamente com o seu guia de 200 páginas, foi apresentado no Whitney Museum, Participant INC. e no Miami MoCA. Foi vendido na Artbook no PS1 MoMA e agora faz parte das coleções permanentes da Biblioteca de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Harvard e do Peabody Essex Museum em Salem, MA. Bobby recentemente concluiu as filmagens de The Ghost at Skeleton Rock, uma curta-metragem que escreveu e dirigiu, baseada na sua história de coming-out em 1992, durante o auge da crise da SIDA. | https://sweetkitty.com/

ARTIST TALK is a series of conversations that offer the community a chance to meet the artists-in-residence at Zaratan and to gain insight into the creative process. 
During this encounter, Bobby Abate will present his Outsider Tarot deck, released in 2021, alongside a peek at their latest project.  
Historically, cartomancy decks have served as tools for recording local and familial histories, often through games. Most early decks were created for the wealthy and powerful.  
For the artist, creating their own cartomancy decks represents an act of rebellion, empowerment, and inclusion—a way to weave the histories and lore of the marginalized into this tradition.  
The Outsider Tarot is inspired by those who exist beyond the margins: artists, visionaries, outlaws, witches, eccentrics, musicians, Queers, activists, nerds, collectives, and anyone who challenges the status quo. It is not a recreation of the world’s most popular Tarot, the Rider-Waite deck. Bobby Abate will discuss the decade-long process of researching and creating a Tarot deck from the ground up, using the esoteric framework of the Hermetic Qabalah. This ancient system, which shaped the designs of Arthur Waite, Aleister Crowley, Manly P. Hall, and others, became the foundation for my modern and inclusive reimagining of the Tarot. 
The artist will also share insights into their newest project: a fortune-telling deck that fuses the Lenormand tradition with Polari, the secret language used by gay men in mid-20th-century Europe. This deck transforms a coded language of survival into a contemporary tool for divination and empowerment.

BIO: BOBBY ABATE (Brooklyn, NY) is a Queer artist, filmmaker, and editor whose work has been showcased at the Museum of Modern Art’s MediaScope series, the New York Film Festival, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the San Francisco Cinematheque, and most recently at International Objects in NYC. Their Queer Objects series won third place at the 2024 Annual Works on Paper show, juried by Whitney Museum Chief Curator Kim Conaty, who praised the “playfulness in the selection of objects that were meaningful to the artist and in the way Abate captured their spirit.” Bobby’s residencies include the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Art Space on Governors Island (2023), the Constance Saltonstall Foundation in Ithaca, NY (2024), and the VCCA in Amherst, VA (2024). They are the 2024 recipient of the Princess Grace Special Projects Grant, the Leighton International Artist Exchange Program grant for a residency at Zaratan Art Center in Lisbon (2025), and the DVAA Artist Fellowship (2023). Bobby holds an MFA from Bard College. As an editor, Bobby contributed to seasons 3 and 4 of the Queer docuseries We’re Here on HBO, which received Peabody and Television Academy awards. Additionally, they create animations for renowned drag performer Sasha Velour. In 2021, Bobby self-published The Outsider Tarot, featuring 80 original artworks that reimagine the traditional Tarot in a modern, Queer context. This deck, along with its 200-page guidebook, was presented at the Whitney Museum, Participant INC., and Miami MoCA. It was sold at Artbook at PS1 MoMA and is now part of the permanent collections at Harvard University’s Fine Arts Library and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.
