“Where are we going? Where you at?”, questionam vozes alternadamente tensas e embriagadas em “Movements”, uma das faixas mais recentes produzidas por DJ Qu. São perguntas que facilmente colocamos a nós mesmos enquanto navegamos as profundezas labirínticas de um set seu. Qu encadeia com mestria temas de tonalidades obscuras e quase alucinógenos capazes de desorientar o mais lúcido, mas a narrativa que constrói com eles é pelo menos garante de que, se quem o ouve deixa de saber onde está, ao menos percebe que ele sabe perfeitamente onde vai e nos quer levar: um vasto desconhecido. A abordagem original e nebulosa ao lado mais negro do house, feita como que através de lentes desfocadas, de Ramon Lisandro Quezada, de seu nome, recolhe aplausos e respeito desde finais da década passada. Logo no início da sua ascensão há um dado biográfico impossível de ignorar : Qu forma com Levon Vincent e Fred P uma pouco Santa Trindade de discípulos da Underground Quality de Jus-Ed que, mais tarde co-adjuvados por gente como Anthony Parasole e Joey Anderson, deram corpo ao novo som house e techno de Nova Iorque. O seu trabalho mais marcante é o personalizado álbum Gymnastics, saído na Strength Music do próprio Qu, considerado pelos mais atentos uma das preciosidades do house em 2011, mas a qualidade desse longa duração tem sido continuamente igualada por EPs em constante rotação nas playlists de DJs de várias índoles, de Dixon a Marcel Dettmann ou Zip. DJ Qu assume sem problemas que o seu som pode ser chamado “deep house”, mas deep de uma substância e conteúdo quase místicos. Preferimos antes outro epíteto : maestro do house sinistro. O seu som pinta-o mais como uma figura fugaz que salta das sombras para a luz sussurrando-nos convites a que o sigamos. E nós seguimos, com DJ Qu, em busca do lado oculto do house. - Nuno Mendonça ~ “Where are we going? These are questions that we easily find ourselves asking while navigating the labyrinthine depths of one of his DJ sets. Qu masterfully sequences tracks with obscure and almost hallucinatory tones, capable of disorienting the most lucid amongst us, but the narrative he creates with them assure us at least that, even if we stop knowing where we´re at, we can be safe in the knowledge that he knows exactly where he´s guiding us to. A vast unknown. The original and nebulous approach to the darker strains of house, created as if through blurred lenses, by the one called Ramon Lisandro Quezada, has been applauded and respected since at least the end years of the last decade. Right at the start of his profile´s ascension, there´s some biographic data impossible to ignore: Qu constitutes, along with Levon Vincent and Fred P, an unholy trinity of disciples of Jus-Ed´s Underground Quality who, later completed by guys like Joey Anderson and Anthony Parasole, embodied the new house and techno sound of New York. His defining work is the very personal album Gymnastics, issued through his own Strength Music seal, seen by the most knowledgeable as one of 2011´s most precious house releases, but the quality statement made with that LP has been duly followed up by equally strong EPs which have been on rotation in the playlists of names as varied as Dixon, Dettmann and Zip. DJ Qu has no problems with his sound being labeled as deep house, but it´s a deepness imbued with almost mystical substance and content. We rather prefer another epithet : sinister house maestro. His sound paints him has an elusive character jumping from the shadows into the light, whispering us invitations to be followed. And we duly follow after DJ Qu, in search of the occult side of house music. - Nuno Mendonça
