O jovem de Barcelos, Luís Gonçalves, está a chegar a um ponto do seu percurso tão assinalável quanto meteórico, se tivermos presentes que o seu primeiro trabalho registado no Discogs tem apenas 3 anos. A constante rotação nos sets de monstros como Ben Klock e Jeff Mills junta-se a trabalhos lançados na Figure, de Len Faki e na Soma, dos Slam, e gigs cada vez mais frequentes em locais de culto como o Tresor em Berlim ou o Batofar em Paris, para constituir um estatuto que muitos levam muitos anos a conquistar. Tudo fruto de talento natural mas também de uma ética de trabalho admirável que levaram a uma maturação célere do techno angular, penetrante e certeiro que propõe e que se prepara para dar um salto exponencial de nível com o novíssimo longa-duração a sair na Soma, o segundo em apenas um ano, “Space Exploration”. O nome é um rótulo perfeito para a obra : à colecção de temas mais “de pista” presente no anterior The Gare Album, sucede-se uma verdadeira exploração dos confins dos canônes techno, mais dedicado a buscar formatos mais experimentais de expressão de uma visão do estilo que não nega influências clássicas mas as reconverte progressivamente num som reconhecível como sendo o seu. Antes que este meteoro abandone as nossas imediações espaciais apontamos, não telescópios, mas ouvidos, à fascinante cosmologia sonora de Lewis Fautzi. • Alex FX https://soundcloud.com/alexfx Observando o momento presente da carreira do portuense Alex Fernandes, apetece dizer que estamos perante o segundo fôlego de um corredor de longa distância. Há duas formas pensar o seu percurso : ou lamentar que alguém com tamanha dedicação e capacidade, tenha passado mais de 2 décadas quase sempre arredado da ribalta, ou regozijar-nos com o facto de que a paixão e a persistência, ainda podem produzir frutos, por mais tardios que sejam, neste meio tão volúvel como o da electrónica. Desde 1987, ainda antes de a entidade Alex FX ter nascido (em 1995), já Alex se embrenhava de cabeça nas máquinas e no DJing. Provavelmente saíu tão cedo do bloco de partida, que quase todos o perderam de vista. Mas paulatinamente, Alex foi palmilhando quilómetros, nunca limitado a uma pista, sempre explorando outras e as suas margens, um tipo normal, mas com um perspectiva diferente das electrónicas, do techno, ao drum n bass e breakbeat, até formatos mais experimentais. Da obscura mas saudosa Warning Inc, à celebrada Kaos, remixando os Reporter Estrábico ou imaginando bandas sonoras de filmes inexistentes como no seu até agora único LP, “Underdub” (1997), Alex FX fez simplesmente o que sentia que tinha a fazer. E continua, agora com o impulso de uma espantosa prestação no recente Boiler Room Lisboa (ou Boom, como lhe chama), o tal segundo fôlego. Com material suficiente para dois álbuns e um tema a caminho para a Faut Section do companheiro de cartaz Lewis Fautzi, Alex FX corta mais uma meta, agora no Lux. Ou, como ele sempre afirmou, enceta um recomeço, porque... “Dark is a mere beginning. Extended and amplified” • V i L https://soundcloud.com/vilmusic Perturbando a paz e apoquentando os cepticos, há movimentos na noite lisboeta dispostos a temperar a sua tão famosa luz própria, com mais profundos tons negros. O colectivo Warface, que compreende também, e entre outros, os há não muito tempo inquilinos da cabine do Lux, Bangkok Snobiety, são um dos mais definidos e activistas desses movimentos. E é dele que emerge um vulto, V i L, o lisboeta Nuno Costa. A arma para a perturbação colectiva é o techno, mas um techno não ancorado só ao 4x4 e “cabeça para baixo”, permitindo-se fugas a vertentes mais ambientais e mentais, no entanto resolutamente sombrio e assertivo, com claras afinidades às abordagens mais europeias do género conforme cimentadas pela armada espanhola encabeçada por Oscar Mulero, os industrialistas britânicos e os mentalistas italianos. Nas produções que já vai intercalando nos seus DJ sets propulsivos, nota-se que a cartilha está bem apreendida e pronta a ser expandida. O manto de V i L recai esta noite sobre a pista do Lux, prometendo eclipsar a luz de Lisboa. The young man from Barcelos, Luís Gonçalves, is reaching a stage of his path as remarkable as meteorical, if we keep in mind that his earliest work seen on Discogs is only 3 years old. His tracks´ constant rotation in sets by monsters as Ben Klock and Jeff Mills, is complemented by releases on Len Faki´s Figure or Slam´s Soma, and bookings in cult spots like Tresor in Berlin and Le Batofar in Paris. building a status that many take a lot longer to achieve. It´s all the result of his natural skill but also an admirable work ethic which have led to an accelerated maturity in the angular, penetrating and pointed techno he proposes, and which is about to undergo a quantum leap with his all new album on Soma, the 2nd in just 1 year, “Space Exploration”. The name is a perfect description of it´s content : after the more dancefloor ready tracks of his debut “The Gare Album”, comes a true exploration of the outer reaches of the techno canons, more interested in experimenting with the ways of expressing a vision of techno which doesn´t deny the classic influences but progressively converts them into a sound recognizable as all his own. Before this meteor leaves our spatial vicinity, we point, not our telescopes, but our ears, to the fascinating sonic cosmology of Lewis Fautzi. ALEX FX Looking at the present status of Porto-born Alex Fernandes´ career, we´re tempted to say we´re witnessing the second breath of the long distance runner. There´s two ways to think about his journey : either lament that someone with such dedication and skill has spent almost two decades mostly out of the limelight, or rejoice in the fact that passion and persistence can still bear fruits, even if after a long time, in a scene as fickle as the electronic scene. Since 1987, even before the Alex FX entity came to be (in 1995), Alex was diving deep into the machines and DJing. He probably left the starting block so soon, only very few kept him in sight. But resolutely, Alex travelled miles and miles, never stuck to a single lane, always exploring others and their margins, just a regular guy with a different perspective of electronics, from techno to drum n bass and breakbeat, to more experimental forms. From the obscure and much-missed Warning Inc, to the celebrated Kaos, remixing Reporter Estrábico or imagining soundtracks to non-existent movies, like in his only album so far, “Underdub” (1997), Alex FX simply did what he felt he had to do. And he keeps going, now with the added impulse of his stunning performance at Boiler Room Lisboa (or Boom, as he calls it), that second breath. With enough material for two albums ann an upcoming track for Faut Section, the label owned by his line-up partner Lewis Fautzi, Alex FX reaches another crossing line, this time at Lux. Or, as he´s always stated, sets off on a new beginning, because… “dark is a mere beginning. Extended and amplified”. V i L Disturbing the peace and bothering the sceptics, there are movements in the night in Lisbon, willing to temper it´s famous light, with darker shades. The Warface collective, which also takes in, amongst others, recent Lux booth inhabitants Bangkok Snobiety, are one of the most focused and activist amongst those movements. And it´s from there that an ellusive figure emerges, V i L, Lisbon-born Nuno Costa. The weapon for the collective disturbance is techno, but it´s techno not strictly anchored to the 4x4 and “heads down” approach, allowing itself to go on tangents to more ambient and mental contexts, yet always resolutely somber and affirmative, with clear affinities to the european strains of the genre, as cemented by the spanish armada led by Oscar Mulero, the british industrialists and the italian mentalists. In his productions, which he is already dropping into his propulsive DJ sets, V i L shows that his lessons are well learned and ready to be expanded upon.
