Situado numa instalação concebida para disparar munições e silenciar o som das balas, Rubber Coated Steel (2016) é um trabalho em vídeo que apresenta o julgamento fictício de um caso de homicídio real. As legendas são uma transcrição extraída de um caso que remonta a maio de 2014, quando dois adolescentes desarmados, Nadeem Nawara e Mohamad Abu Daher, foram mortos a tiro por soldados israelitas na Cisjordânia ocupada (Palestina). O caso nunca chegou a um tribunal civil, mas foi tornado público pela organização de direitos humanos Defence for Children International. Através da Forensic Architecture, uma agência que realiza investigação avançada em arquitetura e meios de comunicação, esta ONG trabalhou com Lawrence Abu Hamdan para publicar um relatório, incluindo uma análise áudio detalhada dos tiros disparados, que acabou por provar a culpa dos soldados. A peça atua como uma espécie de tribunal à revelia para estes homicídios e o filme como um novo tipo de cenografia jurídica, transformando o visitante em jurado.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan apresenta-se como “detetive”, escutando com ou em nome de pessoas afetadas pela violência empresarial, estatal ou ambiental. Tem base em Beirute (Líbano). Os seus trabalhos refletem acerca do contexto cultural e político do som e da escuta, apresentando-se sob a forma de relatórios forenses, conferências performativas, filmes, publicações e exposições.
As investigações sonoras de Abu Hamdan têm sido usadas como prova em processos para a obtenção de asilo ou como parte de campanhas de ONG internacionais. É autor de obras nas coleções dos museus Reina Sofia (Madrid, Espanha), MoMA (Nova Iorque, EUA), Guggenheim (Nova Iorque, EUA), Centre Pompidou (Paris, França) e Tate Modern (Londres, Reino Unido). Apresentou-se na Biennale de Veneza de 2019 (Itália) e foi premiado, pelo filme Rubber Coated Steel (2017), no festival de cinema de Roterdão (Países Baixos). Em 2019, juntamente com Helen Cammock, Oscar Murillo e Tai Shani, recebeu o Turner Prize, que reconheceu o trabalho dos quatro artistas em questões sociais e políticas contemporâneas.

Set in a facility designed to fire ammunition and silence the sound of the bullets being fired, Rubber Coated Steel (2016) is a video work that presents the fictitious trial of an actual murder case. The subtitles are a transcript drawn from a case focusing on an incident in May 2014, in which two unarmed teenagers, Nadeem Nawara and Mohamad Abu Daher, were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank (Palestine). The case never came before a civil court. Instead, it was made public by the human rights organisation Defence for Children International. Through Forensic Architecture, an agency that undertakes advanced architectural and media research, this organisation worked with Lawrence Abu Hamdan to publish a report, including detailed audio analysis of the gunshots fired. This ultimately proved the guilt of the soldiers. The piece acts as a kind of tribunal in absentia for these murders, and the film as a new kind of legal scenography, transforming the visitor into a juror.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan calls himself a Private Ear, listening to, with and on behalf of people affected by corporate, state, and environmental violence. He is based in Beirut, Lebanon.
His work reflects on the political and cultural context of sound and listening, and is presented in the form of forensic reports, lectures and live performances, films, publications, and exhibitions.
Abu Hamdan’s audio investigations have been used as evidence in asylum cases and as part of international NGO advocacy campaigns. His work is in the collections of the Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain), MoMA (New York, USA), Guggenheim (New York, USA), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France) and Tate Modern (London, UK) and was exhibited at the 2019 Venice Biennale (Italy). His film Rubber Coated Steel (2017) was awarded at the Rotterdam International Film festival (Netherlands). In 2019, he shared the Turner Prize with Helen Cammock, Oscar Murillo and Tai Shani, for their work on contemporary social and political issues.
