No meio do Atlântico, entre África e a América do Sul, a Ilha de Ascensão está sob administração britânica. Empire’s Island faz uma reconstrução desse território insular sob a forma de um estudo em vídeo, com um modelo pormenorizado que mostra que a era colonial e imperial nunca terminou.
A peça conta a história de Ascensão e de como a ilha foi sendo cultivada ao longo de três séculos para servir os interesses de impérios globais. O território foi modificado de acordo com os interesses ideológicos, económicos e militares da estrutura de poder dominante: desde o império holandês, que a utilizou para exilar marinheiros, ao império britânico, que para ali enviou Charles Darwin para torná-la mais verde. Por último, o império norte-americano que, juntamente com os britânicos, estabeleceu na ilha uma enorme infraestrutura militar e de vigilância planetária. Hoje, a ilha incorpora as visões de bilionários como Jeff Bezos e Elon Musk, que pretendem estabelecer colónias ao estilo de Ascensão noutros planetas.
Jonas Staal é um artista visual cujo trabalho lida com a relação entre arte, democracia e propaganda. Os seus projetos expositivos incluem Museum as Parliament (Eindhoven, desde 2018), We Demand a Million More Years (Turim, 2022) e Extinction Wars (Gwangju, 2023). Expôs no Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (Nova Iorque, EUA), no V&A (Londres, Reino Unido), ou no Centre Pompidou-Metz (França). É o fundador da organização artística e política New World Summit (desde 2012), cofundou o projeto de formação Training for the Future (desde 2018), o processo de ação coletiva Collectivize Facebook (desde 2020) e o Tribunal para Crimes Climáticos Intergeracionais (desde 2021). É autor, entre outros livros, de Steve Bannon: A Propaganda Retrospective (2018) e Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (2019).

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Africa and South America, lies Ascension Island, ruled by the British administration. Empire’s Island reconstructs the island territory in the form of a video study with a detailed model that shows that the colonial, imperialist era, never really ended. The work tells the history of Ascension and shows how the island has been exploited over three centuries according to the interests of global empires. The territory has been altered after the ideological, economic and military interests of the dominant power structure: from the Dutch empire, which used the island to exile sailors, to the British empire, which sent Charles Darwin to greenify (geoengineer) the island, to the US empire, which, together with the British, built a massive military and planetary surveillance infrastructure on Ascension. Today, the island embodies the visions of billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, who want to establish colonies on other planets using Ascension as a model.
Jonas Staal is a visual artist whose work deals with the relation between art, democracy, and propaganda. His exhibition projects include Museum as Parliament (Eindhoven, 2018-ongoing), We Demand a Million More Years (Turin, 2022) and Extinction Wars (Gwangju, 2023). Staal is also the author of Steve Bannon: A Propaganda Retrospective (2018) and Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (The MIT Press, 2019), among other books.
