BASFE

The circumstances that led to the creation of BASFE were as spontaneous, intuitive and in-the-moment as the music itself. Bartolo (guitar and modular synth) and Gabriel Ferrandini (drums) were in a recording session for another project. Once their session was done, the studio unexpectedly became available for the next several days. It happened that their friend Pedro Sousa (tenor sax) was in town and ready to play. The gear was already set up, the ‘record’ button was pushed, and BASFE was born!

Bartolo is a Lisbon-based guitarist, composer, producer and sound artist who has worked with artists including Miguel Rio Branco, Damo Suzuki, M. Takara, Paal Nilssen-Love, Arnaldo Antunes and Caetano Veloso. Pedro Sousa is an established and in-demand saxophonist based in Portugal who has collaborated with Thurston Moore, Evan Parker, Phil Niblock, Sei Miguel, Rafael Toral and many others. Gabriel Ferrandini is a drummer well versed in jazz, free improvisation and rock music. He is a member of RED Trio, amongst several other projects, has worked as a solo artist and with musicians including Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Axel Dörner, Evan Parker and Nate Wooley.

Bartolo

Bartolo (born in 1974 in Brazil) uses sound as his main form of expression. Whether it’s linked or not to visual elements, the sound and it’s relation with everything else in the environment has been his primary focus since the beginning. As a producer, composer and instrumentalist, Bartolo has worked on solo projects and collaborations with artists including Miguel Rio Branco, Damo Suzuki, M. Takara, Paal Nielsen-Love, Arnaldo Antunes and Caetano Veloso. Bartolo has also created many sound installations and performances, both as solo projects and (since 2001) with Duplexx, an experimental project on the borderline between music and sound art. In early 2020, Bartolo released his second solo album, Six improvisations for creatures and machines (Chant Records), featuring an inspired contribution from drummer Gabriel Ferrandini. Also in 2020, Bartolo released Pantanal em Chamas, recorded in one take consisting of a continuous performance of a modular synth patch. The album was released by Festival Novas Frequências (Brazil) and TSONAMI arte sonoro festival and radio station (Chile). All profits from album sales were donated to organizations fighting the intense fires that have devastated Brazilian Pantanal over the last few years. Bartolo is one of the founding members of Orquestra Imperial. The band has featured many guests during its existence, including Jean-Claude Vanier, Caetano Veloso, and Jorge Mautner, just to name a few. In 2022 the band is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a series of concerts in Brazil. Pedro Sousa

Before establishing himself as one of the most abrasive free jazz and free improvisation saxophone players in Portugal, Pedro Sousa (born in 1986 in Portugal) was involved in cutting-edge electronic music, using samplers and electric guitar in the trio OTO. His uniquely personal vision of dub recording/processing strategies - taken to psychedelic dimensions - gave him a unique approach to improvised music as a saxophone player. His identity as a saxophonist was already in place when the album Live at ZDB (with Thurston Moore and Ferrandini) was recorded in 2012. Sousa has collaborated with artists including Evan Parker, RP Boo, Phil Niblock, Sei Miguel, Rafael Toral, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Johan Berthling, Peter Evans, Marching Church, Glockenwise and Black Bombaim. His influences include many forms of electronic music, rock, traditional music, experimental and improvised music. Sousa weaves all of this together into a musical identity that embodies the search for an artistic language of its own. In 2014, as the winner of the Ernesto de Sousa Scholarship (curated by Phil Niblock) Sousa participated in New York’s Experimental Intermedia Festival with a performance/installation entitled “Performance for plural larynx: A song for True.” The piece was also presented at the Intermedia Foundation and Eyebeam in 2014, the Hällo Festspiel in Hamburg in 2017, and at the FK:K / Festival for Sound - Music – Art in Bamberg in 2019. Sousa got to know Bartolo during rehearsals with his long time partner Gabriel Ferrandini in early 2014. Since then, Bartolo and Sousa have collaborated sporadically, developing strong communication as players. BASFE is the culmination of this relationship and a reflection of their natural and intuitive style of playing together. Gabriel Ferrandini

Gabriel Ferrandini (born in 1986 in the U.S.) is a tireless drummer, full of musical ideas and visions. He has developed what might be called a ‘militancy’ via his pivotal role in bands including RED Trio and Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio, and in a vast network of collaborations with great musicians such as Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Axel Dörner, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Nate Wooley, Alex Zhang Hungtai and Peter Evans. His musical influences are almost too many to name but include jazz, free improvisation and various forms of rock music, melded into a mosaic of sound that is always evolving through exploration. Ferrandini’s bold solo work includes the album Volúpias (released on Clean Feed in 2019), where he worked with a classic trio format of drums, saxophone and double bass. Eschewing the standard notion of ‘virtuosity,’ Ferrandini uses his prodigious technique on drums and percussion to create a state of confluence between rhythm, texture and harmony. While his music might sometimes sound like something closer to contemporary or electro-acoustic music rather than jazz, Ferrandini artistic expression always embodies the essence of freedom. Clippings: JACC Records, Trás-os-Montes Records, All About Jazz, The New European, mentions on TheWire Mag. Social media: Facebook, Instagram, Bandcamp.
