PIN 10 ANOS – PIN 10 YEARS Curated by Marie-José van den Hout 10 September – 3 October 2014 Opening Tuesday 9 September 2014 at 6pm Galeria de Arte Moderna Fernando Azevedo, Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes Rua Barata Salgueiro 36, 1250-044 Lisbon PIN – PORTUGUESE ASSOCIATION FOR CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY – is pleased to present PIN 10 ANOS – PIN 10 YEARS – an exhibition in celebration of the association’s 10th anniversary. Presenting work created by members of PIN between 2004 and 2014, the exhibition is formed of two parts: • The first shows 90 pieces, chosen by Marie-José van den Hout, from the 500 or so submitted by member artists and schools. • The second is a display of 17 photographic portraits of some of the people who have supported PIN over the last 10 years. Each photograph shows a supporter wearing one of the exhibited pieces of jewellery and reflects the context in which the image was created - a dialogue between the photographer, the sitter and the jewellery (and by extension, the jewellery artist). The exhibition, at Galeria de Arte Moderna Fernando Azevedo, Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon, will be open to the public from 10 September to 3 October 2014. The exhibition opening will take place at 6pm on 9 September 2014 and will be attended by the guest curator Marie-José van den Hout, founder of Galerie Marzee in the Netherlands. The exhibition was designed by Fernando Brizio. RELATED EVENTS TALK WITH THE CURATOR MARIE-JOSÉ VAN DEN HOUT 10 September 2014 at 5pm. Open to the general public. There could not be a more appropriate metaphor inherent in this exhibition design which (in)voluntarily reflects the reality of an association which, over the last 10 years, garnered all efforts, consistently refused to desist and was able to attain its objectives with the bare minimum of resources. There is still so much to do. The 10 years that have elapsed have made a contribution, at least, to the mapping of contemporary jewellery in Portugal and of Portuguese contemporary jewellery in the rest of the world. The implicit meaning of the phrase Em Toda a Parte em Lugar Nenhum (Everywhere, Nowhere) – title of the 10th edition of the Ars Ornata Europeana Symposium in Lisbon, which led to the establishment of PIN in 2004 – still underlies this structure that carries, apparently without any effort, works chosen by Marie-José van den Hout . The choice of the curator offers one possible glimpse of the works created in the last decade by artists who have become PIN members – one choice, from approximately 500 images submitted by about 60 artists. The nylon threads extended between the two walls at a distance of eight and a half metres trace an almost invisible plan, a simulacrum of glass, and refer to the Portuguese expression “presos por um fio”, which translates as “suspended by a thread”, a phrase used to reflect the fragility of a situation. It is true that PIN often stands on very vulnerable and risky ground. This is, however, the main driver that makes us move forward, as happens with the intrinsic force of these two opposite walls that are linked by multiple fine and flexible nylon threads which reflect, metaphorically, the strength of unity. Walls might peel, bolts might loosen, but we cannot damage the masonry. It is in line with this way of thinking that PIN has built its foundations along its approximately 3,650 days of life. Conscious of how important it is to have a well-founded structure, especially on rocky ground, this exhibition design, the result of an expert, rigorous and detailed project by Fernando Brízio, portrays the modus operandi of the association. The importance is in every detail and PIN has been focusing on that. At the minimum. At the almost imperceptible. But still essential to guarantee the existence of PIN´s structure. Jewellery implies a body and so, alongside the exhibition designed to support work from 27 entities [both individual artists and schools], the event organised in celebration of PIN’s 10th anniversary also commissioned various portraits of some of the people who, in so many ways, have supported PIN in its initiatives and projects during a decade of activities. Plans. Headquarters. Website. Journeys. Exhibitions. Workshops. Lectures. Courses. Talks. Meetings. Discussions. Critics. The great majority of PIN’s intentions have come together because of the support of the people portrayed in this exhibition and the institutions which many of them represent. But not only that. Without the involvement and kindness of the [chosen] group of photographers who accepted this extra-ordinary challenge to portray people and pieces of jewellery, it would not have been possible to gather a photographic narrative of the history of PIN. To all, and especially those who have departed and cannot share this moment with us [Robin (Fior), Madalena (Figueiredo), Alexandra (Ribeiro) and Verónica (Leonor)], THANK YOU so much.
