Neste workshop vamos tentar promover uma atitude mais do-it-yourself no âmbito da gravura e entender os princípios básicos da química na gravura em metal, bem como a importância geral da química na gravura. Vamos gravar as matrizes com vernizes alternativos de origem orgânica e sintética, como cera de abelha, parafina e cera de sapato.
Todos os materiais estão incluídos no workshop e no final o/a inscrito/a pode ficar com as impressões que fizer (sem custo adicional), bem como adquirir uma das chapas de zinco nas quais vai gravar (5 euros por chapa).
*** Programa ***
10:00 – 13:00 – Breve explicação sobre o desenvolvimento histórico do verniz de gravura, bem como os vernizes que iremos utilizar e porque funcionam. Segue-se uma demonstração de experiências e exemplos feitos com estes mesmos materiais. Também vamos falar sobre uma abordagem mais DIY na gravura no geral, como reutilização de matrizes, preparação de papel, vernizes alternativos, entre outras medidas. Depois da demonstração, vamos começar a preparar as matrizes e o papel e, se sobrar tempo neste primeiro bloco, vamos começar também a gravar as matrizes.
13:00 – 14:00 – Almoço (não está incluído, podem almoçar onde quiserem ou trazer almoço)
14:00 – 18:00 – Trabalho prático: preparar matrizes, gravá-las e depois imprimir. No final, discutir experiências e resultados.

*** Sobre a formadora ***
Flor de Ceres Rabaçal (1995 ) é uma ilustradora e gravadora de Lisboa. O seu trabalho tem como principais motivos a violência, a atmosfera e a Natureza, bem como a concretização e aplicação destes temas no seu trabalho na gravura, que, por sua vez, caracteriza-se pela experimentação com materiais, superfícies e a química. Fez a sua licenciatura (2017) em Artes Plásticas na esad.cr e completou um mestrado em Desenho na FBAUP 2020). Foi também co-autora de um artigo sobre técnicas de gravura que apresentou na Conferência Internacional de Ilustração e Animação (CONFIA) em 2020.

Printmaking workshop: alternative grounds for metal etching
During this workshop we’re going to try to promote a more do-it-yourself attitude within etching in addition to trying to relay the basic chemical principles of metal etching, as well as the general importance of chemistry in etching. We’re going to etch the plates with alternative grounds of both organic and synthetic origin, such as beeswax, paraffin wax and shoe wax.
All the materials are included in the workshop and in the end the students may keep the prints they printed (with no additional cost) as well as acquire one of the zinc plates they etched (5 euro per plate).
*** Program ***
10:00 AM – 13:00 PM – Brief explanation on the development of the etching varnish, the grounds we’ll be using and why they work, as well as demonstration of previous experiments done with these materials. We’ll also discuss approaching printmaking with a DIY approach in a general manner, such as reusing plates, prepping paper, alternative varnishes, amongst other things. After the demonstration, we’ll begin prepping the plates and the paper and, if there’s still time within this first segment, we’ll also begin etching them.
13:00 PM – 14:00 PM – Lunch (not included, you may have lunch wherever you like or bring your own)
14:00 PM – 18:00 PM – Practical work: prepping plates, etching plates and printing them. Once we’re done, we’ll discuss the experiments and the results.
This workshop will be taught in dual ENG/PT as required by the students’ needs.
*** About the teacher ***
Flor de Ceres Rabaçal (1995) is an illustrator and printmaker from Lisbon. Her work has as its primary motif violence, atmosphere and Nature, as well as the practical application of these themes within her work in etching, which, in turn, is characterized by experimenting with materials, surfaces and chemistry. She earned her BA in Fine Arts in esad.cr (2017) as well as an MA in Drawing in FBAUP (2020). She additionally co-authored a paper on printmaking techniques that she presented in the International Conference on Illustration and Animation (CONFIA) in 2020.
