The formation of the modern state is inextricably linked to the expropriation of collective lands, the slave trade and a social economy that assigns women the role of labor producers, forcing them to perform free domestic services necessary for reproduction and support of the nascent system’s labor forces.

In this lecture at Hangar, Center for Artistic Researh, Silvia Federici will analyze the annihilation of different forms of commonality and the exploration and domination of female bodies and knowledge, namely, in the body-territory relationship and its correspondence with artistic production.

Silvia Federici is a feminist activist, teacher and writer. A prominent figure in the international campaign in favor of wages for domestic work, she also played an important role in the 1990s in protesting the International Monetary Fund’s “structural adjustment” policies on the African continent. Emeritus professor at Hofstra University in New York, she has published several books on women’s history, colonialism, globalization and precarious work. Caliban and the Witch is one of Federici’s most acclaimed books.

Fabián Cevallos Vivar is a Post-doctoral researcher at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Fine-Arts and PhD in Post-Colonialisms and Global citizenship, University of Coimbra. He is a Researcher and Professor in Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO)/Center for Social Studies (CES) and Researcher at the University of Lisbon, Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEBA) and in Hangar, Center for Artistical Research.
