PENDER STREET STEPPERS Culpem o Canadá. Bem do outro lado dos oceanos chega-nos a dupla Pender Street Steppers. Liam Butler e Jack Jutson trazem uma sensibilidade muito própria ao panorama da música de dança, pondo a musicalidade e a beleza em primeiro lugar. Parte do colectivo da editora Mood Hut, onde em 2013 lançaram um aclamado álbum em formato cassete, o duo encanta tanto a fazer a sua música como a tocar a dos outros. A saber: com eles não há pressas. Relaxados também se dança muito bem, sabiam? E é aí que brilha a selecção dos Steppers. Podemos encontrar Disco e House carregados de alma e groove, por vezes baleáricos ou tropicais, ritmos onde perdermo-nos é deliciosamente bom. Às vezes as coisas podem ser tãon simples assim: uma guitarra que soa na altura certa, uma linha certeira sacada à melodia de um órgão que nos vai dando a volta à cabeça. Uma atmosfera de amor, sensualidade e liberdade é o que apregoam – conseguem imaginar algum convite mais honesto? Dificilmente. Uma estreia aguardada ansiosamente, um regresso às raízes numa exortação a celebrar a música sorridente. HASHMAN DEEJAY Tal como os companheiros desta noite, Hashman Deejay é canadiano e pertencente ao colectivo Mood Hut. Não sabemos bem o que levou os jovens membros deste grupo de Vancouver a preferirem entregar-se mais à música que ao hóquei no gelo, mas estamos gratos. Hashman, ou Matt Tanner, é recatado na sua presença pública, não sendo conhecidas entrevistas extensas ou grandes manobras de promoção online (que quase parecem ser indispensáveis presentemente). A música é presença que chegue, e brilha por si só em “Sandopolis”, longa-duração editado na Future Times e que soa a um qualquer sonho de Verão, onde o banal da vida é banhado a apontamentos de luxo saídos dos sintetizadores de Tanner, oscilando entre a dureza e a doçura hipnótica que podia bem ter vindo de uns The Orb. Aguarda-se uma perspectiva fresca na hora de subir aos comandos da cabine, com as profundezas do House a agitarem não só as Funktion One como todos os nossos corpos por arrasto. Liam Butler and Jack Jutson bring a particular feeling to the dance music panorama, putting musicality and beauty first. A part of the Mood Hut label collective, where in 2013 they released an acclaimed album in cassette format, the duo fascinates with both the music they make and the music they play. With them, there are no hurries, and dancing is a relaxed effort. The Steppers’ selection glows warm with soul and groove filled House and Disco, sometimes leaning on Balearic or tropical, filled with rhythms in which to get deliciously lost. Sometimes, things can be this easy: a guitar stroked at the right time or a perfect organ melody that’s messing with out minds. An atmosphere of love, sensuality and freedom is what they proclaim – can you imagine a more honest invitation? A much awaited debut for the Pender Street Steppers and a return to the roots, in a celebration of cheerful music. HASHMAN DEEJAY Just like his partners for the evening, Hashman Deejay is Canadian and belongs to the Mood Hut collective. We don’t really know why the youngsters in this Vancouver group chose music over, say, ice hockey, but we’re glad. Hashman, aka Matt Tanner, is quiet in his public presence and there aren’t many known interviews or online promotion manoeuvres (something rare in this day and age). His music seems to be enough, and shines on its own in “Sandopolis”, a LP released on Future Times that sounds like the soundtrack to a Summer dream, where life’s trivialities are washed in luxurious details from Tanner’s synthesizers, oscillating between rough beats and a hypnotic sweetness that could have just as well been a The Orb creation. A fresh approach to the DJ booth is to be expected, with the depths of House shaking up not only the Funktion One soundsystem but our very own bodies as a result. The path to the future is made up here, in nights like these and with artists like this. Hashman Deejay is in Lisbon to help us figure out the mystery in him: all we have to do is listen closely. Words: Inês Duarte RUSH is a word that can be used in a multitude of contexts but whose several meanings all converge to a prevailing idea, even if expressed in different ways: the urge to do, the craving for feeling, the verve for wanting. This party was born from all that. In a time when the names and the lineups repeat themselves in an established and predictable star system that appeals more and more to recognition rather than discovery, it’s also vital for LUX to search for new paths and to share new clues for a future that’s happening today. That’s what RUSH is. It’s neither following the sure path nor doing more of the same. It’s taking risks with what we believe. It’s searching and finding those who are worth listening to and be seen right now, enticing a demanding and curious audience with the urge of that enthusiasm: it’s now because it has to be … we can’t wait any longer! Concerts, live acts or DJs, there’s gonna be new PEOPLE. Some that have never been to LUX, to Lisbon, or to Portugal. Or that might have been here but without the recognition they deserve. This is your (and our) time.
