DJ Dustin

DJ Dustin

The random rhythm of the crackling of a bonfire lit near a crystal lake. The light and reborn hope of a sunrise watched in silence by the sea. Maybe these metaphors are a bit too ethereal to try to describe someone´s music, but it´s the type of image easily evoked by the music of Weimar (Germany) based label/family Giegling. Dustin is one of it´s two mainstays along with Konstantin and as DJ, represents probably the most deep-house side of the label, although when it comes to Giegling, categorization of any kind is really not explaining much about what to expect from them, such is the kaleidoscopic vision that Dustin and his friends cast on techno and house. As such, we might as well admit how much we are anticipating and expecting to feel the melange of ecstasy and melancholy, power and grace, of the Giegling sound, which Dustin lays before his audience as no one else can quite match.

Edward (LIVE)

Edward, by itself a low-key, almost banal pseudonym, is Berlin-based Giles Aiken, and he makes music that you could never call banal. Edward is a nomadic mind whose thoughts can be far away on a desert camp by nightfall, or lost beyond Mars escaping to the outer limits of the galaxy. His music can be earthly and psychedelic or cosmic and abstract, vaguely called deep-house but with ambient, ethnic and krautrock influences, originating unique pieces like the “Into A Better Future” LP (Giegling, 2014), or his 3 EPs as Desert Sky, one of which “Karma”, represents a pre-existing portuguese connection, since it was released on João Maria´s Assemble Music label. If you doubt how effectively these combinations can work on a dancefloor, let us state that this is someone who says he likes to mix Brian Eno with techno beats, creating moments of near levitation on the floor, and that “Skating Beats” from the “Into A Better Future” album is a true house bomb, one of the best in recent months. For all of this, if Edward thinks he´s the guy to take us into a better future, we trust him fully, lend him our hand, and tell him “take us there with you”.

Vril (LIVE)

A few months ago someone told us, after seeing Vril play at Berghain: “I´ve been listening to techno for 20 years but that night I felt like it was my first time hearing it”. That really is one of the most fascinating aspects about Vril and Giegling itself, their ability to take the fundamental elements of tried and tested genres and make them sound absolutely new, fresh and vital. When it comes to Vril, we´re talking about dub-techno. Reverberating chords and cavernous kicks. Nothing new there, right? Wrong. Hit a large experience as sound engineer and a past devouring hip-hop, the chords become more cutting and the groove becomes merciless and all of a sudden it´s like you´re watching techno on a large 3D screen instead of a common TV set. Amongst his biggest fans are Levon Vincent, who as far back as 2012 was saying how his releases on Giegling´s Staub series were his favorite of that year, and RØDHÅD, whose Dystopian is now managing his bookings. It wasn´t just luck, after all, that made Vril´s performance the most talked about in Boiler Room session to remember dedicated to Dystopian. His debut amongst us has been expected for ages and on this Giegling night, we finally open the “Portal” to the “Vortekz” called Vril.

Konstantin

“I believe you and me make love forever”. So told us the title of the first record ever put out by Giegling, in 2009. It´s authors were a duo called Kettenkarussell, and Konstantin is one of them. In 2014, Resident Advisor elected Giegling as it´s Label Of The Year. And in 2015, we say that what the label has already achieved is in fact a labor of love, whose legacy will last forever. Konstatin´s dream of translating the fantasy of the Giegling family into an expression of our own fantasies, is more and more real. But through what he affirms as a creative mind and what he displays in his DJ sets, Konstantin refuses to rest in a neat little corner and doesn´t want to see Giegling become an “institution”. Konstantin does not want to be a slave to the party, but also bring something of his own. He doesn´t want to be functional but instead dares to be dysfunctional. He doesn´t want whoever hears him to stay in his confort zone, he wants to take us to places we´ve never been. In fact, the Giegling philosophy and aesthetic become distilled into a DJ set full of techno and house cuts but of a kind that is able to evoke hopeful sadness and euphoric nostalgia, as if the old clichéd phrase about not being sad it´s over, but happy because it happened, became an essential statement of life. And it´s a phrase we believe will be in the minds of everyone who hears him tonight at Lux.
