Ben UFO Algo que se torna imediatamente notório numa conversa, ou na leitura de uma entrevista, com Ben UFO é que ele é um verdadeiro “nerd” da música, coisa que aliás o próprio admite alegremente. Percebe-se que não estamos perante um principiante com dificuldade em nomear discos com mais de cinco anos, mas sim de um “ancião musical” que nos faria sentar em redor de uma fogueira para falar de discos, como quem recorda o seu primeiro e subsequentes amores da sua vida. Para Ben Thomson os discos não são só a música contida nas suas espirais, são também artefactos que nos lembram de pessoas e coisas. Desde miúdo que ele os vê assim e o seu entusiasmo mantém-se juvenil e a sua mente sempre aberta, o que transparece quando o ouvimos ao vivo ou nos sets da sua já longa residência na rádio britânica Rinse.fm. Foram estas características, junto com a sua adaptabilidade, criatividade e capacidade técnica espantosa, que o levaram a estar dois anos seguidos (2013 e 2014) no top 10 de DJs da Resident Advisor, sem precisar de produzir música. Entre os seus pares há quem diga, como Jackmaster, que ele é neste momento, tecnicamente, o melhor do mundo. Outros, como Joy Orbison, afirmam que a sua arte é tal que transforma o próprio processo de tocar música tão fundamental como criá-la. E se neste texto não falámos nunca de estilos e eras, é porque para nós, ouvintes e dancers que o aguardam no Lux, fica o desejo expectante de voltar a tentar perceber como Ben UFO torna o experimental acessível, o clássico em algo que parece escutado pela primeira vez, e o novo em faixas que nos acompanharam toda a vida. Pearson Sound É um exercício curioso, espreitar a bio de Pearson Sound que está no Resident Advisor. Em 2011, o seu autor afirmava que o trabalho de David Kennedy se estava a afastar cada vez mais do dubstep e da bass music (onde ganhou notoriedade inicial com o nome Ramadanman), e mostrava afinidades com o bom velho 4/4 do house e do techno. Pois bem, atrevemo-nos a dizer que talvez seja altura de rever a biografia oficial de Kennedy, para que a mesma diga que neste momento, o seu estilo só se pode chamar… Pearson Sound. E que som é este? Os adeptos e críticos atrapalham-se para o definir, umas vezes feito de ondas de percussão, outras de melodias cósmicas, outras vezes ainda abandonando totalmente a vertente rítmica expondo paisagens sonoras ambientais. Imagine-se um Plastikman pós-acid nascido no UK e talvez se consiga formar uma ideia. Depois de diversos EPs fundamentais para entender a música electrónica britânica da última década, Kennedy apresenta-nos agora o culminar do seu percurso sob a forma do fresquíssimo álbum de estreia, também chamado “Pearson Sound” lançado na influente Hessle Audio, que ajudou a fundar, um exemplo perfeito do tipo de disco que primeiro se estranha, tal o quebra-cabeças sónico que representa, mas que depois se entranha enquanto continua a dar algo de novo a cada escuta. Esta atitude altamente individual de Pearson Sound resulta em DJs sets desafiantes mas viciantes, como o Lux já teve oportunidade de testemunhar por duas vezes. Kennedy cita discos de Maurizio, Burial, LTJ Bukem e Four Tet entre os discos da sua vida. Da soma de todas estas partes resulta algo maior do que elas, um “ir para fora cá dentro” musical para experienciar em classe executiva na pista do Lux. Textos Nuno Mendonça ~ BEN UFO Something that becomes immediately apparent when speaking in person or reading an interview with Ben UFO, it´s that he is a true music nerd, which he will happily admit. You just realize you´re not speaking to a novice who struggles to name records older than 5 years, but in fact a sort of musical wise old man, who´d love to sit you around a fire and talk about records as if he was recalling his first and subsequent loves in life. You see, for Ben Thomson, records aren´t just the music contained in their spires, they´re also artefacts that remind you of places and things. That´s how he sees them since he was a kid and his enthusiasm remains juvenile and his mind remain open, as you can easily feel when hearing him play live or in the sets he builds for his long-standing residency at the british radio station Rinse.fm. These characteristics, along with his adaptabilty, creativity and stunning technical prowess, have brought him up to be one of Resident Advisor´s top 10 DJ two years in a row (2013 and 2014), without him even having to produce music. Amongst his peers, some, like Jackmaster, state that right now, he is technically the best DJ in the world. Others, like Joy Orbison, believe that his artistry is such that he turns the process of playing as a DJ as fundamental to the music, as creating it. And if in this text we never mention genres and eras, that´s because for us, as listeners and dancers waiting for him at Lux, what´s left is the expectant desire of once again trying to understand how Ben UFO makes the experimental accessible, the classic now sounds as if it´s the first time we´ve ever heard it, and new tracks immediately become like music that´s been with us throughout all of our lives. PEARSON SOUND It´s interesting to look at Pearson Sound´s bio still up on Resident Advisor. In 2011, it´s author stated that David Kennedy´s work was stepping away from dubstep and bass music (where he gained initial notoriety as Ramadanman) and was showing affinities with the good old 4/4 of house and techno. Well, we dare say that maybe it´s time to revise Kennedy´s official bio, so that it says that right now his sound can only be called… Pearson Sound. And what sound is that? Fans and critics stumble trying to define it, sometimes it´s made of waves of percussion, others of cosmic melodies, other times still, it totally abandons rhythm exposing ambient soundscapes. Imagine a post-acid Plastikman born in the UK and maybe you can get somewhat of an idea. After several EPs fundamental for the understanding of british electronic music in the last decade, Kennedy now presents to us the culmination of his path by way of his debut album “Pearson Sound”, just now released on the influential label he helped set up, Hessle Audio, a perfect example of the type of record that initially baffles you, such is the sonic brain teaser it presents to the listener, but then hooks you in and keeps revealing new details with each listen. Pearson Sound´s highly individual attitude turns into challenging but addictive DJ sets, as Lux has heard in two occasions. Kennedy cites records by Maurizio, Burial, LTJ Bukem and Four Tet amongst hs favorites.
