GUDRUN GUT

A “dilettante” is what you call someone who is a lover of Art or someone who gets involved in an area of activity without putting in the effort it usually takes to succeed in it. In 2008, the prestigious magazine “Wired” put Gudrun Gut on it´s cover and called her precisely that. Well, Wired was right but also wrong. Gudrun proved to be, since the start of her involvement in the Berlin music scene in the mid-70s, addicted to artistic expression in a multitude of forms, but far from not putting in the effort. For starters, she was a member of an early incarnation of industrial godfathers Einsturzende Neubauten. But, curious and exploratory as she´s ever been, Gudrun soon tried her hand at experimental electronic pop, putting together the band Malaria!, well known in Germany in the 80s, then dabbling in visual arts, and founded the Monika Enterprises and Moabit Musik labels. For many years she also kept a weekly radio show in Berlin called Oceanclub, along with ambient mastermind, Kompakt collaborator and member of The Orb, Thomas Fehlmann. Besides being a sort of mother figure to the Berlin scene, mainly through her constant support of new artists in the more experimental areas of electronica, Gudrun Gut has built a steady reputation as a DJ, playing something someone decide to call “Musicas Obscuras”. It´s in this role that Gudrun in on this line-up. Another famous female in german arts once sang “life is a cabaret”. For Gudrun Gut, life is an Andy Warhol piece, tonight in exhibition at Lux.

REINHARD VOIGT

Having an older, famous family member, can many times be a sort of curse for a younger sibling trying to have his way in life. such can be the expectations laid upon him if he tries to follow his predecessor. With Reinhard Voigt, Wolfgang Voigt´s younger brother, it´s fair to say that those expectations have been consistently exceeded for over 15 years now. In fact, both brothers are seen as equally vital and pioneering figures in minimal techno, a lot of that due to their work with this evening´s curator label, Kompakt. Aside from many parallels in their work (for example, a love of acid house), Reinhard actually seems at times like the most off-centre, leftfield of both brothers, with experimental diversions of note in his work, bringing to the Kompakt body of work a certain transgressive flavor. Still, Reinhard is a lover of simple things, his sight always set in the basics of what makes us dance. He knows that weekend after weekend, it´s that good old bass drum that brings us together on the dancefloor. And this is what Reinhard Voigt should be able to show us tonight : the simple science behind that kick that moves you.

WOLFGANG VOIGT

~

In a line-up with as much History as the one presented in this Green Ray, Wolfgang Voigt is basically a learning subject by himself. Kompakt co-founder, along with Michael Mayer and Jurgen Paape and one of it´s most frequent creators, Wolfgang started out as a major force in acid-techno as Mike Ink, then defined the essence of minimal techno as Studio 1, and revolutionized ambient-techno and dub-techno with his seminal project GAS. Even if Wolfgang Voigt had stopped creating new stuff 10 years ago, his date with electronic eternity is more than set. Yet he is still an agitator, with genius and consistency, whether it´s on Kompakt or other foundational labels in electronic music such as Warp or Raster-Noton. It´s quite impossible to even fathom a CV as distinguished as Wolfgang Voigt´s. But yes, you can pinch yourselves, it´s true. One of electronic music´s most eminent figures will be at Lux and missing out is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope.

MICHAEL MAYER

E a tua?”.

~

If there´s such a thing in electronic music as a “brand”, it´s Kompakt. “Brand” in the sense that, when you mention the name, people immediately associate it with a certain type of sound and usually very high quality control. And Michael Mayer was the one who built it, along with Wolfgang Voigt and Jurgen Paape. And that´s why nowadays, even sitting at a café, Michael can confortably ask “well, my label started a sound, defined a genre. What about yours?”. It didn´t happen by luck. Whatever hat he puts on, he wears it well : DJ, producer, remixer, label-head, sponsor of the arts… and he´s been doing it for decades. It would be overwhelming to count his achievements, but it´s safe to say that simply seeing his name on a line-up and as curator, is an unbeatable quality seal, commanding respect and trust. Even if the names for this Green Ray were total unknowns, we could be sure about an exceptional night of music. After all, Mat«yer defines himself as not just an entertainer but also an educator. He´s also an old friend of Lux, as much a part of our history as of dance music´s history, and that´s why we say, “Michael Mayer für immer”, that is, forever.

THE ORB

, The Orb´s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld, Little Fluffy Clouds, Pomme Fritz, e ainda muito fica por dizer.

One interesting phenomenon in electronic music in 2014 was a renewed interest for “ambient” music. All of sudden, fans were again talking about the chill out rooms so common in early 90s raves, and the music that served as their soundtrack. But we don´t mean the music playing in hotel lounges or in Ibizan cafés at sunset. This is about expansive, enveloping, journey-like, infinte soundscapes. like the one The Orb pioneered and popularized. Under the rule of Dr. Alex Patterson, with the invaluable contribute of luminaries like Jimmy Cauty (founder of The Orb with Patterson, but also of The KLF), Thrash, Youth (Killing Joke bassist and producer of everyone from Pink Floyd and U2 to Depeche Mode and Primal Scream) and, always and forever, Thomas Fehlmann, a veritable parade of ambient electronica defining masterpieces were created : A Huge Ever Pulsating Brain... , The Orb´s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld, Little Fluffy Clouds, Pomme Fritz… and so much more to say. In any case, The Orb´s veritable monuments of sound leave nothing unsaid. Like some sort of pyramids of Egypt of chill out and ambient, exploring, knowing or rediscovering The Orb is mandatory for this Green Ray.

ATA

Todas.

With three letters only, we can define landmark entities like the Playhouse label of the Robert Johnson club and label (subject of a Lux label night not long ago) : Ata. This relaxed looking german bon-vivant is the guy behind all of this and has placed his indelible signature in a lot of what makes the german techno and house scene what it is. Just like this evening´s curator, Ata is, beyond being a DJ, someone who nurtures and influences music and artists, which makes him a sort of soul brother to Michael Mayer. Besides being a DJ of considerable merit and repute, Ata is reportedly an avid gastronomer and exceptional cook. If you look at the names who´ve worked with Live At Robert Johnson (Dixon, Prins Thomas, Roman Flugel, Ivan Smagghe), and you get an idea about the musical delicacies in Ata´s menu. Which means, he´s all about selection, preparation and presentation. Ata´s presence in the Green Ray night leaves us confident that Lux will get a spot in the Michelin Guide of music. And how many stars will Ata get? All of them.
